ANKARA, Turkey – The Turkish government has called for a peaceful resolution of the Tigray conflict, which is now spreading to other parts of Ethiopia, a big setback for ongoing efforts to stabilize the Horn of Africa nation.
During the past nine months, the Tigray Defense Forces [TDF] and the Ethiopian National Defense Forces [ENDF], fought for control of the Tigray region, causing a humanitarian crisis that left more than 200,000 people without access to essential services.
In fact, telecommunications and road networks to Tigray were severely damaged, leading to the crisis. TDF accuses ENDF of committing atrocities in Tigray, with the federal government accusing TDF of committing similar crimes.
And on Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a closed-door meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, where he expressed concerns about the conflict in Tigray, which has also displaced thousands of people from their homes.
In Ankara, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said he supported a peaceful resolution of the Tigray conflict, noting that the two sides should meet, agree on the means of cooperation. The statement comes weeks after Abiy Ahmed called on residents to help attack TDF.
Thousands of people have been killed in Tigray with reports of gang rapes and mass expulsions of Tigrayans by Ethiopian and allied forces. Millions more went hungry as the ENDF, Amhara regional troops and Eritrean soldiers descended on the Tigrayans.
Erdoğan and Abiy oversaw the signing of military deals, including a military financial cooperation deal amid a latent conflict in Tigray. It is not clear whether the Turkish government wishes to send military assistance to Ethiopia.
In addition, Ethiopia is seeking better ties with Turkey and support against Arabs backing Egypt and Sudan in the Nile Dam dispute. Addis Ababa has been building the Nile dam for a few years, thus provoking Khartoum and Cairo.
“Thank you President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for warmly welcoming my delegation and I to Turkey today. The agreements we have signed strengthen our relationship. I appreciate Turkey’s support for the continued development and stability of the country. Ethiopia, ”Ahmed said after the trip.
The United Nations and other world superpowers have also called for a peaceful resolution of the Ethiopian conflict. The TDF is determined to close the Amhara and Afar territories, which has further angered the authorities in Addis Ababa.
