Somalia’s Leader Confronts Controversy Over Deportation Agreement with Germany
Somalia’s Presidential Decision on Deportation Accord Faces Criticism
MOGADISHU, Somalia – Among the cacophony of political discourse, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire does not mince words when challenging President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s deportation pact with Germany, labeling the memorandum of understanding ‘reckless.’
Khaire insists that any such international agreements must resonate deeply with Somalia’s current scenario. The persistent turmoil that pushes Somalis to seek asylum abroad cannot be ignored.
He voices worry about the treaty’s neglect of Somalia’s chaotic backdrop fuelling the refugee crisis. Germany pledges to partner with Somalia in accelerating deportations from this East African nation.
During a tete-a-tete in Berlin, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Somali President Mohamud affirmed a joint move to rapidly send back migrants lacking legal residency in Germany.
According to Scholz, these deportations are primarily focused on individuals engaged in grave offenses.
“This initiative aligns with the interests of the sizeable Somali community thriving here in Germany, who have seamlessly woven into society,” reassured the chancellor.
Around 65,000 Somalis call Germany their second home. Yet, Scholz notes only a “fraction” lacks the proper status to stay. For nearly 30 years, Somalia has waged an uphill battle for peace, with the relentless threat of Al-Shabaab worsening the situation.
Globally in nations like Scandinavia, the U.S., and Australia, Somalia tops refugee figures. Some have smashed barriers and even attained political victories — a shining instance being Ilhan Omar, Minnesota’s 5th District Representative.
