According to the presidency, the discussions centered on the government’s record in security, counterterrorism operations, preparations for direct elections, response to drought conditions and efforts to bolster national unity.
President Mohamud updated the diplomats on gains made through cooperation between the government and the Somali public, with particular emphasis on territory recovered from al-Shabab and the push toward universal suffrage.
He also expressed appreciation for international partners, thanking them for their sustained backing in rebuilding Somalia’s institutions, improving security and supporting economic growth.
The statement did not indicate whether the clashes in Baidoa were raised during the meeting.
The diplomatic briefing took place as federal government troops, supported by armed groups aligned with rival factions in Southwest State, moved into Baidoa after intense gunfire with regional forces on Monday.
Casualty figures remain uncertain. Neither federal authorities nor the Southwest administration has issued official numbers.
President Mohamud’s current term is due to expire in May 2026. However, recently approved constitutional amendments extend the federal government’s mandate by one year, a decision that has been rejected by several federal member states and opposition groups.
International partners have repeatedly called on Somali leaders to settle disputes through dialogue and to avoid steps that could further strain the country’s fragile federal arrangement.
