Mogadishu (AX) — St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Mayor Nadia Mohamed, a Somali American, arrived in Mogadishu on Friday for an official visit that drew a warm welcome at Aden Abdulle International Airport.
Somali government officials greeted Mohamed on arrival, joined by ministers, lawmakers, federal and regional officials, and members of the public.
Mohamed, the first Somali, Muslim and Black woman elected mayor of St. Louis Park, said her election marks a step forward and underscores the expanding influence of Somalis in leadership, civic engagement and political representation worldwide.
Banadir Regional Administration Deputy Mayor for Security and Politics Mohamed Ahmed Diiriye Yabooh said the visit would help deepen ties between Mogadishu and St. Louis Park.
He added that Mohamed’s presence also serves as recognition for Somali citizens who are making notable achievements outside the country.
Yabooh congratulated Mohamed on her historic win and extended his best wishes for her continued success in leadership and public service.
During her stay, Mohamed is expected to hold meetings with Somali leaders, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
The reception ceremony was attended by Acting Speaker of the House of the People Saadiya Yasin Haji Samatar, federal ministers, members of Parliament, federal and regional officials, intellectuals from the capital and the Somali cultural and literary group Barbarta Gashaaman.
Mohamed’s trip comes as Somalia continues to emphasize the role of its diaspora in politics, development and public service around the world.
