Somali Ambassador to Sweden Presents Credentials to Finnish President, Community Welcomes Move

Helsinki – In a milestone for Somalia’s ties with the Nordic country, Somalia’s Ambassador to Sweden, Ambassador Abdikarim Ahmed Mohamed, has officially presented his credentials to Alexander Stubb, a development that the Somali community in Finland has greeted with enthusiasm, the Finnish Somali Media Network (SSMV) reported.

Officials say the ambassador’s presence in Finland should make it easier for Somali nationals to access consular services, removing persistent obstacles many have faced when seeking assistance from their government.

At a formal ceremony, President Stubb received Ambassador Abdikarim’s credentials — marking the first time Somalia has had an ambassador formally accredited to Finland.

The Finnish Somali League, Somaliliitto, marked the occasion with a reception at its headquarters. Ambassador Abdikarim used the visit to meet a broad cross-section of the community, including traditional elders, youth leaders, academics, local council members from Helsinki and Vantaa, and representatives of civil society.

The chairman of Somaliliitto, Abdulrahman Raage, called the appointment a historic achievement for the community.

“It is a great historical milestone for the President of Finland to receive the credentials of a Somali ambassador. Many services that were previously difficult for Somalis in this country will now become more accessible,” he said in an interview with Suomen Somalimediaverkosto.

Across Finland, members of the Somali diaspora expressed strong support, viewing the accreditation as a meaningful step that will benefit Somalis living throughout the country.
