MOGADISHU, Somalia (AXADLE) – On Monday, Al-Shabaab insurgents launched an audacious strike against Somali military forces and local militias in Galgadud’s heartland, resulting in the tragic demise of at least 25 troops and militia members, according to local insiders and government officials.

The surprise assault unfolded in Geriire village, where the militants targeted the assembled soldiers and local fighters.
Colonel Ali Osman acknowledged the calamity, stating, “Our forces were on a mission, but they walked right into a treacherous trap.”
Al-Shabaab’s spokesperson, Abdiasis Abu Muscab, brazenly took credit for the violence and claimed they had captured some troops alive during the confrontation.
“We dispatched 25 soldiers to the hereafter. And yes, we’ve nabbed a few,” he boasted.
Villagers in Cowsweyne, a rural area, reported that Al-Shabaab operatives dumped lifeless bodies near their community late Monday evening, post-battle.
Mogadishu officials have noted that among the casualties was Colonel Mohamed Duraan, leader of the 1st Battalion, 28th Brigade, of the 21st Division, whose body was seized by the militants.
Cowsweyne, approximately 290 kilometers from Mogadishu’s hustle and bustle, has become a tinderbox of conflict.
A significant offensive erupted there last year, compelling government troops into retreat after a fierce August fight.
In a different ambush the same Monday, Al-Shabaab struck soldiers close to Mogadishu, resulting in more fatalities, as per local witnesses.
This attack transpired in Basra village, about 30 kilometers from Mogadishu’s cityscape.
Among the fallen was Commander Hassan Ahmed Shiishiile, a militia leader supportive of the government, as reported.
The Ministry of Defense has yet to issue an official statement.
Nonetheless, Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur acknowledged ongoing operations in the Galgadud region on Sunday, offering no additional specifics.
