Mogadishu — Former president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed on Friday agreed to vacate the compound where he had been staying in the Mirinaayo area of Abdiaziz district, a move that came as international actors urged calm and a return to talks.

The convoy escorting the former president included the Commander of the Somali National Army, the Chief of the Somali Military Court and several traditional elders. At one point, officers from the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) set up a roadblock and demanded the disarmament of Sheikh Sharif’s security detail; the obstruction was later lifted without violence.

The Federal Government of Somalia had earlier called on opposition figures to go back to their neighborhoods as part of broader efforts to ease political tensions in Mogadishu and restore order in the capital.

Diplomatic pressure for de-escalation has been steady, with appeals coming from the US, EU, AU, IGAD and other international partners.

On Wednesday, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) voiced deep concern over reports of violence in Mogadishu amid rising political strains in Somalia.

IGAD condemned all acts of violence and urged all parties to show maximum restraint, lower tensions and settle their differences through peaceful, inclusive and constructive dialogue.

Analysts warn the situation could deteriorate further unless the government and opposition reach agreement on a framework for the upcoming elections.
