EU Ambassador Fosters Dialogue and National Unity at Mogadishu Iftar
MOGADISHU — The European Union ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, renewed her call for inclusive dialogue and national consensus as she hosted an iftar reception this evening at the EU diplomatic compound in Mogadishu during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Mogadishu iftar brought together senior officials of the Federal Government of Somalia, political leaders from across the spectrum, representatives of civil society and the media, and members of the international community. The gathering offered a rare, neutral space for reflection and engagement among actors who do not often share the same platform.

Against Ramadan’s message of peace, mercy and forgiveness, Di Mauro urged Somali leaders to continue engaging constructively and to place the national interest above political differences. Her appeal echoed ongoing efforts to bridge divides as Somalia navigates sensitive political questions.
In recent months, the EU ambassador has maintained an active role supporting Somali-led dialogue, holding regular consultations and discreet engagements aimed at building understanding among key stakeholders. Her outreach has involved representatives of the federal government, opposition figures and other political actors seeking common ground on core national priorities.
Discussions she has encouraged have touched on several politically charged files central to Somalia’s stability:
- Electoral processes and timelines
- Security arrangements and coordination
- The ongoing constitutional review
Diplomats and Somali officials alike credit the European Union with steady support for locally driven solutions and an emphasis on inclusive, consensus-based approaches. That posture has positioned the EU as a consistent advocate for dialogue while keeping ownership of processes in Somali hands.
At the iftar, Di Mauro commended the resilience of the Somali people and their leaders, noting that, despite persistent challenges, the country has moved forward through dialogue and cooperation. She conveyed confidence that even during periods of tension, Somali leaders can find common ground to advance a shared national agenda.
Participants described the evening as both convivial and practical, underscoring its value as a forum where political and community leaders could exchange views outside formal negotiations. The setting during Ramadan amplified calls for unity, reconciliation and mutual respect.
A seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in complex political environments, Di Mauro has consistently advocated for national harmony and compromise. Her approach emphasizes Somali ownership of political processes while offering the EU’s support to facilitate constructive engagement where needed.
As Somalia continues through a delicate political period, the EU’s role as a partner encouraging dialogue remains visible. The Ramadan iftar served as a reminder that beyond formal talks, trust-building and sustained, inclusive engagement are essential to reinforce consensus and maintain stability in the country.
