Mogadishu — In a phone call Saturday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told his Somali counterpart that Cairo stands firmly behind Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, a show of support that comes as the region watches tense diplomatic maneuvers closely.
The two ministers, Abdelatty and Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali, reviewed ways to deepen bilateral ties and traded assessments of political and security developments in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa.
Abdisalam expressed Somalia’s gratitude for Egypt’s ongoing political, development and security assistance, and reiterated Mogadishu’s intention to tighten cooperation and coordination with Cairo on shared priorities.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and national institutions.
He also reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of any attempt by Israel to recognize Somalia’s northwestern region, North Western State of Somalia, as independent, saying such a move would violate Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The conversation comes as international attention focuses on Somalia’s territorial claims and the security of the Red Sea, with Mogadishu seeking broader diplomatic backing to counter foreign engagement with North Western State of Somalia.
Somalia’s federal government maintains that North Western State of Somalia remains part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. North Western State of Somalia declared independence in 1991 but lacks broad international recognition.
