The ministry announced a total of 1,561 confirmed cases, with 506 fatalities. Currently, 628 individuals are being treated in hospitals and isolation facilities, while 253 people have successfully recovered.
This crisis has drawn attention from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) due to a troubling trend: patients testing positive for Ebola are frequently fleeing isolation centers, significantly hindering containment efforts.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Uganda, 19 cases have been documented since the outbreak was first identified in May, resulting in two deaths. Health officials confirmed that these cases are connected to the northeastern Congo outbreak.
Ebola, a highly contagious virus, spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. The ongoing outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, posing a significant challenge as there is no approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment available.
However, there is a glimmer of hope as two antiviral therapies have recently progressed to clinical trials and are undergoing evaluation.
