A week after a 1-1 stalemate on Tyneside, the hosts tore the tie apart after the interval, with Fermin Lopez, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha spearheading a merciless onslaught.
Before that surge, the opening 45 minutes were frantic before 60,000 fans, producing five goals and opportunities at both ends.
In the sixth minute Raphinha slotted Barcelona ahead from Fermin Lopez’s through ball, only for Anthony Elanga to level soon after, drilling in from a tight angle on the end of a diagonal from left-back Lewis Hall.
Barcelona reclaimed the lead on 18 minutes as Marc Bernal prodded in from close range, capitalizing on Gerard Martin’s knockdown from a free kick that exposed soft Newcastle marking.
Newcastle answered again when Elanga bagged his second, turning home after Harvey Barnes’ cross took a slight deflection and broke kindly for a tap-in.
The tempo barely dipped: Dan Burn threw himself in front of a Lewandowski effort, and Lamine Yamal somehow failed to convert from close range.
Yamal atoned in first-half stoppage time, burying a penalty after Kieran Trippier hauled back Raphinha.
If the first half was a shootout, the second was one-way traffic in Barcelona’s favor.
Fermin Lopez pushed it to 4-2 when Lewandowski’s deft flick sent him through to finish. The Pole then nodded in a fifth from Raphinha’s corner while Newcastle were briefly down to 10 men after Sandro Tonali exited with a thigh injury.
On the hour, Lewandowski struck again, converting a slick pass from Yamal, and Raphinha wrapped it up following a costly mistake by Joe Willock.
With the contest settled, coach Hansi Flick emptied his bench to protect key legs for the weekend.
