Woman seriously injured in shark attack at Sydney beach
Police said the woman, who is in her 30s, was taken to hospital by road.
A routine day at a popular Sydney beach turned terrifying when a woman was seriously injured in a shark attack, authorities said, the latest in a troubling run of incidents off Australia’s coastline.
Police said emergency crews were sent to Coogee Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs after reports that a swimmer had been bitten.

“The woman was pulled from the water by members of the public who commenced first aid,” police said, adding that the victim sustained serious injuries to her arm and leg.
Police said the woman, who is in her 30s, was taken to hospital by road.
The attack came a week after a man died when a shark attacked him while he was fishing off the coast of Western Australia state, the most recent fatal case.
Last month, a 39-year-old man was killed in a shark attack while fishing on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef.
Ten days before that, a 38-year-old was fatally fatally mauled off an island near Perth in Western Australia.
In January, authorities closed dozens of beaches along Australia’s east coast, including in Sydney, after four shark attacks in two days.
Those incidents followed heavy rain that left the water murky, drawing sharks closer and making them harder to spot.
Most shark attacks in Australia happen along the east and southeast seaboard, which records about 20 such incidents a year, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
