Officials said multiple victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained in the shooting.

Authorities said the victims’ conditions were not immediately known.

The University of Iowa said there were “confirmed victims” in the shooting, but did not release further information about the number or severity of casualties.

Through emergency alerts, the university urged people to stay away from the area and “remain vigilant.”

The school said the gunfire was reported near College and Clinton streets, a busy stretch in the center of the Midwestern college town known for its nightlife.

The United States has long grappled with gun violence, with firearms widely accessible and shootings claiming thousands of lives each year.

In February, two people were killed in a shooting at South Carolina State University. In December, two people were killed and nine others were wounded when a gunman opened fire inside a classroom at Brown University.
