A morning dive off Western Australia turned deadly after a shark fatally attacked a man in waters near Perth, marking the country’s fourth lethal shark incident this year, police said.

The victim, a man in his thirties, was attacked by a 4.5-metre shark near Michaelmas Island, southeast of Perth, according to ambulance services and the Western Australian government.

Authorities said the incident was reported at about 11.25am local time.

Police said the man had been spearfishing when the shark struck. He was brought back to shore, where paramedics tried to save him.

In the aftermath, the state’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged the public to exercise “additional caution” in the area and to closely monitor reports of shark sightings nearby.

The fatal attack comes only two weeks after a man was killed by a shark in Queensland’s far north.

It is also the second deadly shark attack in Western Australia this year. Last month, a man died after a great white attacked him off Rottnest Island, near Perth.

Australian scientists say a mix of busier coastal waters and warming oceans may be altering shark migration patterns, a shift that could be playing a role in the apparent rise in attacks.
