Spain’s Coach De la Fuente Boasts: ‘Our Team Tops the Tournament Roster’

Following his team’s dominant 4-1 victory over Georgia, setting up a face-off with Germany, Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, proclaimed them the premier squad at Euro 2024.

Spain, overwhelming in their approach, dismissed tournament newcomers Georgia with ease in Cologne, racking up a conclusive win.

On the pitch, Spain’s offensive force was on full display, amassing an impressive 3.25 expected goals (xG) while conceding a mere 0.25. The team’s young stars, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, shone brightly.

Up next, they confront Germany in a riveting quarter-final. Despite the challenge, De la Fuente’s confidence in his squad is unwavering.

“Our team exudes confidence, brimming with talent, quality, and dedication,” he asserted.

“Conviction in one’s capabilities is crucial. Without meaning any disrespect, I stand by my assertion that we are top of the crop at this championship.”

“Germany presents a formidable adversary, hosting world-class players and exhibiting remarkable discipline and organization,” he acknowledged.

“Yet, they will encounter a squad of equal calibre, characterized by commitment, discipline, and an insatiable hunger for victory,” De la Fuente added.

“I know it sounds cliché, but in football, minute details often determine the outcomes of games.”

In Euro 2024, Spain trails only Germany, who have netted 10 goals to Spain’s nine. However, in terms of non-penalty xG (8.9) and shot attempts (72)—with 35 aimed at Georgia’s goal—Spain leads confidently.

Throughout the tournament, they have conceded just once, via an own goal by Robin Le Normand in their latest clash.
