Sassuolo Stuns Serie A Champions Inter with 1-0 Upset Victory

Sassuolo improved their chances of survival in Serie A with a surprising 1-0 victory over champions Inter on Saturday.

Inter suffered their second defeat in Serie A this season as Armand Lauriente’s first-half goal secured a crucial win for relegation-threatened Sassuolo.

Sassuolo has a unique dominance over Simone Inzaghi’s team this season, being the only squad to defeat Inter in the league. They previously won 2-1 in September.

The outcome was a significant boost for Sassuolo in their fight against relegation, sitting second from the bottom with only three points behind Cagliari in 14th place.

Lauriente scored the only goal of the game after 20 minutes when Josh Doig retrieved the ball from Denzel Dumfries near the corner flag and delivered it for Sassuolo’s matchwinner to score from close range.

This loss to Sassuolo marked the first time Inter lost a league match against a bottom two team since November 2014 when they fell to Parma 2-0.

Lauriente has been in exceptional form, scoring four Serie A goals since the start of April, matching the top-flight record alongside Hakan Calhanoglu.
