Cristiano Ronaldo is bullish on Portugal’s chances to dominate at Euro 2024, asserting that collective glory will define this team’s legacy.
At 39, Ronaldo will carve out a historic niche by competing in his sixth Euro, a record. He tops the charts with the most appearances (25), most goals (14), and joint-most assists (6).
The five-time Ballon d’Or champ was instrumental in Portugal’s 2016 victory and aims to nab another international trophy.
“Being the first to participate in six Euros thrills me; it’s a testament to my enduring presence in the sport,” Ronaldo disclosed to UEFA.com. “Yet, these milestones are just part of my broader football journey.
“I am excited and honored to contribute to our national team’s quest for another win, our ultimate aim.”
Despite Portugal acing all their qualifiers, warm-up losses to Croatia and Slovenia have marred their prep. With one last match against the Republic of Ireland before facing the Czech Republic in their Group F opener on June 18, stakes are high.
Ronaldo remains optimistic about the squad’s raw talent but emphasizes that true success hinges on clinching international titles.
“I’m convinced this team will thrill our supporters, starting with this EURO,” Ronaldo stated. “Still, history only remembers the victors, and I trust this talented group can triumph.
“Yet, we know raw talent isn’t enough. A myriad of factors influences success at a major tournament. We possess the necessary components, but it’s about taking it step by step, match by match, believing victory is within reach.
“What we achieved in 2016 was monumental in both Portuguese and global football contexts. Now grounded yet aspirational, we see it’s plausible to claim the EURO once more,” he concluded.
