Martinez Shakes Off World Cup Disappointment, Eyes the Coveted Copa America Golden Boot

Lautaro Martinez has tallied up four goals in this Copa America, his latest brace clinching a 2-0 victory for Argentina against Peru.

On the pitch for Argentina, Lautaro Martinez showcased his return to form by netting twice against Peru, capping off Group A’s play on Saturday. With these goals, Argentina clinched the top spot in their group and now looks forward to a quarter-final clash with either Venezuela, Mexico, or Ecuador.

Martinez, Serie A’s top scorer for 2023-24, ended the group phase leading in goals scored and attempts made, achieving this feat despite not starting two games. Replacing a rested Lionel Messi, Martinez excelled, shaking off the underwhelming performance at the Qatar World Cup where he failed to score.

“I’m overjoyed,” the 26-year-old shared with TyC Sports. “Not only did I score in all three group games, but I also contributed significantly to the team’s efforts.”

Post-match, Martinez reflected on bouncing back from his World Cup disappointment. “I had an excellent season with my club which set me up well for this Copa America. I wanted to make amends for the World Cup, and I’ve managed to do that. Let’s keep pushing forward.”

Currently leading in the Golden Boot race, Martinez is two goals ahead of anyone else. Since his debut in 2019, he remains the competition’s highest goal scorer, outpacing even Messi and Luis Diaz.

In the absence of the suspended head coach Lionel Scaloni, assistant Walter Samuel noted Messi’s improving health and potential readiness for the quarter-finals. “He’s feeling better, but discussions about his health are ongoing”, Samuel mentioned.

Martinez expressed optimism about Messi’s condition. “Leo’s well. I wish for him to join us next outing. My goal was a nod to his importance to our squad,” he stated. Angel Di Maria chimed in, affirming, “Leo’s recovering—we anticipate his return for what follows. Today’s win is dedicated to him.”

This marks the third instance in their last 12 Copa America participations that Argentina has won their first three games, echoing their performance in 2007 and 2016.
