Morgan Excluded from Hayes’ Star-Studded Team USA Olympic Lineup

Alex Morgan won’t be taking the Olympic stage for the first time since 2008. Her absence from Emma Hayes’ U.S. squad marks a striking shift.

Morgan boasts 123 goals from 224 caps and proudly clinched gold at the 2012 London Olympics. Yet, following her recovery from an ankle injury, she’s been goalless in her last eight appearances for the San Diego Wave.

Expressing her disappointment on social media, Morgan shared, “Missing the Olympics is tough, a tournament that holds a dear place in my heart. Donning the crest has always been a matter of immense pride.” Soon, she plans to cheer for her teammates from afar, igniting support across the nation.

Hayes, steering her first tournament as U.S. coach, has picked Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, Sophia Smith, and Mallory Swanson to lead the attack, sidelining Morgan. “Selecting the squad was arduous, given Alex’s formidable track record. Nonetheless, I’ve decided to take a fresh approach,” stated Hayes.

The women’s football tournament kicks off on the 25th of July in Paris, culminating with the gold-medal showdown on August 10. After bagging bronze in Tokyo, the U.S. will contend in Group B alongside Zambia, Germany, and Australia.
