De Jong edges out Zirkzee in selection for Netherlands’ Euro 2024 squad

Frenkie de Jong will miss Barcelona’s LaLiga finale, yet Netherlands’ coach Ronald Koeman has summoned him. The aged Zirkzee was shockingly left out of the Euro 2024 preliminary roster, with de Jong securing a spot. A squad of 30 was announced, to be narrowed to 26 for the upcoming tournament. Notably, the Netherlands faces France, Austria, and Poland in Group D. The absence of Zirkzee, a 12-goal scorer for Bologna, surprised many. Koeman favored experienced players like Weghorst, Depay, and Brian Brobbey. Despite a month-long absence from Barcelona due to an ankle injury, de Jong was included. Gravenberch returns after a year, joining van Dijk and Gakpo on the team. Van de Ven and Frimpong have earned spots, along with Wijnaldum. Koeman will finalize his 26-man squad by the end of May.
