Press Union Highlights ‘Shrinking Democratic Space’ in Liberia

In a stark warning, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has highlighted a troubling decline in democratic principles within the nation, particularly focusing on increasing threats to freedom of speech and expression. Their recent statement reflects a mounting public unease regarding potential repercussions for those who dare to voice their opinions.

“Currently, a considerable number of Liberians—comprising journalists, students, activists, and everyday citizens—are growing increasingly apprehensive about their ability to speak out without encountering intimidation, arrest, or other forms of retaliation,” the statement articulated. The PUL underscored the importance for President Joseph Boakai’s administration to adhere strictly to the reform agenda on which it was elected.

Specific instances of alleged rights violations raised by the PUL include the contentious removal of former Speaker Fonati Koffa and the recent ousting of Representative Yekeh Kolubah from the House. Furthermore, the Union expressed alarm over efforts perceived as attempting to undermine the Freedom of Information Act through a troubling Non-Disclosure Agreement affecting government employees.

The PUL warns that these events signal a dangerous deviation from democratic norms, jeopardizing hard-fought achievements such as the abolition of laws concerning criminal libel, sedition, and malevolent practices.
