Human Rights Watch Calls for Protection of Civilians Amid Rising Violence in Burkina Faso

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued a strong plea to all parties entangled in the conflict in Burkina Faso, urging them to adhere to international law, specifically the Geneva Conventions. These conventions prohibit summary executions, attacks on civilians, and sexual violence. This appeal comes on the heels of harrowing reports indicating that militants have killed at least 38 civilians, abducted nine women, and destroyed property in three separate incidents across northeastern Burkina Faso since late January 2026.

In its statement, HRW highlighted that these brutal attacks seem to intentionally target communities viewed as supportive of, or allied with, militias aiding the military in ongoing counterinsurgency operations.

“The unrelenting brutality of the Al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimeen (JNIM) against civilians is deeply alarming,” said Ilaria Allegrozzi, HRW’s senior Sahel researcher. “The current wave of abuses targeting communities with perceived affiliations to militias reflects a blatant contempt for the distinction between combatants and civilians.”

The situation escalated when nine women were abducted while gathering firewood near the village of Sollé. This village has endured a siege by JNIM for the past four years, exacerbating the scarcity of essential materials for daily life.
