Camera around their necks, Congolese students stroll through the shady alleys of the island of Gorée. They have been waiting for this visit for a long time, explains Armstrong Tsiba Ngounou. “We are very happy that Gorée has opened its doors. It is the emblem of Senegal that is to be visited. The slaves passed here. It represents something. ”
Three cases of Covid …
More than 80% of the island’s population lives thanks to tourism. Mohamed Mboup, tourist guide, is then relieved to resume his activity after seven months of total shutdown. “Activities can be restarted, therefore local tourism as well. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing. ”
Local tourism is what Gorée City Hall wants to develop, while respecting barrier movements and wearing a mandatory mask. A necessity because the borders are not yet open to foreign tourists. “At the restaurant level, the town hall will introduce a decree banning the transport of meals. Because we often saw people come with their pot and without supporting the local economy, ”remarks Mamadou Diop, chief of staff to the mayor of the island.
While Gorée has three cases of Covid-19, authorities are careful to prevent the spread of the virus.
