In Senegal, they are found in most kitchens. Food broths will now be taxed at 25%. This is a new provision introduced by the amended budget law on the budget for 2021. The text was adopted by the last Council of Ministers. The measure is part of the budgetary measures to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. It remains to be seen if it will disrupt the habits.
as reported from Dakar, Charlotte idrac
In its small street restaurant, Sokhna offers daily specials: “Thiébou dieune, Yassa, Kandia soup, mafé, chicken rice …”, dishes accompanied by the essential rice spiced with a cubic broth. “I always put a little in the pot, it’s to give flavor,” she explains.
Maggi, Jumbo, Tem Tem or even Joker … There is a lot to choose from in the market for food broth. In his shop, Abdourahmane, he offers three brands: “All three, it costs 25 francs”, he explains.
25 CFA francs, a little dust in euros or 0.038 to be exact. But in a country with more than 16 million inhabitants, the tax measure will pay off big. According to the Ministry of Finance, 25 billion CFA francs should go to the Treasury, or about 38 million francs, with this measure.
The declaration does not mention the harmful effects of food broths on health, but reminds of their composition: salt, flavor enhancer or fat. For these customers, the new tax is a good thing and it was better in the past: “Before, we used to take salt and smoked fish,” said one customer. “We heard that it causes a lot of illness. Personally, we want to eat yesterday’s dish, which our old women used to cook without broth. It is changing, ”testifies another.
All small cubes will be covered by the new specific fee, whether local or imported.
