Defense Chief Cautions Against Al-Shabaab Ties During Operations

Mogadishu (AX) — Somali Defense Minister Abdikadir Mohamed Nur has made a compelling call to the public: “Steer clear of Al-Shabaab interactions as military operations ramp up in the Middle Shabelle region.” His address on Sunday served as a stark reminder of the militant group’s lingering influence, especially in areas like El Bacad, where some individuals reportedly continue to maintain ties with Al-Shabaab.

The Defense Minister highlighted the precision of recent airstrikes, designed to target senior Al-Shabaab leaders while safeguarding civilians. He fervently urged residents to “distance themselves from the group” and avoid hotspots of militant activity to prevent any harm as counterterrorism efforts intensify.

The Somali Cabinet echoed this sentiment, advising the public to exercise caution. They emphasized the potential dangers posed by staying near Al-Shabaab strongholds, especially with military offensives in active progress. “Your safety is paramount,” the Cabinet underscored.

Campaigns conducted by the federal government, bolstered by international support, have been ongoing in Middle Shabelle since last month. Official reports state that nearly 200 Al-Shabaab members have been eliminated in this concerted effort to bring stability back to the region.
