Libyan elected officials condemn elections in 2021

Two elected officials from Tripoli State Council and the former Constituent Assembly spoke in Tunis in opposition to the plan of Libya’s political dialogue forum, with the support of the UN, to organize elections on December 24, 2021 without a constitution in advance.

as reported from Tunis, Mathieu Galtier

The emergence of a Plan B: this is the scenario that the UN feared in Libya. The announcement of the December 2021 election, made by Stéphanie Williams on Friday, November 13, is illegal, said Abdumonem al-Sherif, a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the constitution.

“She has no right to do that. The Constituent Assembly drafted a constitution. The House of Representatives and the Government have adopted a law on the referendum. Libyans must vote on this project through a referendum. ”

On the contrary, UN experts explain that the various Libyan institutions have never succeeded in getting this draft constitution adopted and that, given the division of the country, we must move forward quickly. They also explain that in parallel with the election, the House of Representatives and the Government can continue to work on the adoption of the Constitution.

For Bachir Elhouch, a member of the Prime Minister’s Office, the UN wants to put the cart in front of the horse to the detriment of Libya: “We cannot build our country without a constitution. Next year, we will be able to present the draft constitution to the Libyans to say yes or no. ”

Anyway, 2021 promises to be potentially rich in voting.
