Egypt’s Prime Minister gave his support
The diplomatic ballet continues in Tripoli. Following the visit of several European and then Algerian officials, Moustapha Madbouli, the Egyptian Prime Minister held talks on Tuesday, April 20, in Tripoli. This first trip since the installation of the new power aims to continue to normalize between the two countries. Cairo, strongly supported by Marshal Haftar, multiplies the gestures towards the new chief. In the joint statement announced at the end of the meeting, Egypt recognizes the government of national unity as the sole legal authority in Libya.
It is another signal from Egypt to the new Libyan supplier: “a clear letter” confirming “Egypt’s support for unity and stability in Libya”, the Egyptian Prime Minister explained when he returned. He was accompanied by eleven ministers.
Cairo, which occupies a new, more balanced position vis-à-vis Tripoli, hosted in mid – February the first official trip abroad for Abdelhamid Dbeibah, head of the caretaker Libyan government.
In Tripoli, the two prime ministers wanted to give their dynamism to their bilateral relationship by redefining the bases. Several memorandum of understanding have been signed in various areas, including electricity and telecommunications. An agreement also stipulates that the national companies in the two countries must restart air connections. These flights resumed on Wednesday, April 21.
On the security front, the two parties will strengthen patrols at their common border and exchange their tasks to better combat terrorism. An agreement in the field of health also makes it possible for Libyans to seek treatment in Egyptian public hospitals.
According to authorities, the Egyptian embassy in Tripoli will reopen its doors after the end of the Ramadan holiday.
