Nurses have gone out into the country to condemn working conditions that have become unbearable. Nearly 10,000 white coats marched in Tunis to demand a profound reform of a health system at the end of its rope.

as reported from Tunis, Michel Picard

Anger is felt in the long procession that links the Ministry of Health to the government presidency. Chédia Mansaya works about a hundred kilometers from Tunis: “We are asking for an improvement in working conditions, we are not asking for any wage increase or anything at all. We see today that the degradation of the public has reached a point of no return. ”

Corruption, poor management, lack of investment, materials, the markers are red. The protest was triggered by death of a young doctor Thursday due to a lift disruption.

Caregivers even rely on carrying patients on their backs on hospital stairs. For Dr. Ben Amar, it’s not just a matter of resources: “And if it still works, it’s thanks to the residents, it corresponds to your trainees. It’s the soldiers from the hospital, it’s a little cannon fodder and now it’s not working. The whole system is in danger of collapsing. ”

Reform the health system

Intern in psychiatry, Jihen Andoun wants to fight for reform this system which she will dedicate her life to: “It is a free fall for public health. It’s a downturn. After ten years of revolution, it’s time to push things forward, pull Tunisia to the top. ”

The general dissatisfaction sometimes leads to despair, especially outside the big cities. Doctor Mejri Salah is chairman of the Dental Association: “We especially ask to take care of regional hospitals located in the interior of the country. We’ve been through too much, so it will not end today. We will hold on until things change. ”

Inland, in Béja, Kairoudan or Jendouba, one day of the general strike should completely paralyze activities this Friday.
