Algeria Condemns France’s Acknowledgment of Western Sahara

Algeria Condemns French Support for Moroccan Sovereignty in Western Sahara

On Thursday, Algeria issued a stern denunciation of the French government’s decision to endorse Morocco’s plans for the autonomy of Western Sahara.

According to a recent statement from Algeria’s foreign ministry, the French informed them of this decision in the past few days.

The ministry emphasized that Algeria intends to take serious action based on this development, holding the French government entirely accountable.

As of now, the French foreign ministry has yet to respond to Algeria’s declarations.

Algeria maintains that a United Nations framework should govern the Western Sahara issue, advocating for a self-determination referendum. They view Morocco’s claim over the territory as a form of occupation.

On the other hand, Morocco asserts that Western Sahara is an integral part of its territory, while the Polisario Front—backed by Algeria—seeks to establish an independent state.

In 1975, Morocco seized most of Western Sahara from colonial Spain, triggering a guerrilla conflict with the Polisario Front, which insists that this arid expanse rightfully belongs to them.

A ceasefire was brokered by the United Nations in 1991, along with a mission dispatched to facilitate a referendum regarding the region’s future. Unfortunately, both parties remain at an impasse.
