the insurgent offensive in Tigray ignores

The Tigray region is being reorganized after an offensive led by the Tigrayan rebels. They recovered the provincial capital Mekele on Monday 28 June. And the other cities in the region during the day on Tuesday and took advantage of the withdrawal of the Ethiopian and Eritrean armies. The federal government has announced a unilateral ceasefire, which has so far been ignored by Tigrayan forces.

as reported from Addis Ababa, Noé Rochet-Bodin

IN military force since Monday, Tigrayan forces have not even mentioned a possible cessation of hostilities. Addis Ababa’s statement about a unilateral ceasefire was called a joke by one of its spokesmen.

Because the Tigrayan fighters completely intend to continue the war. One of its leaders assured that “cleaning should continue in the province”.

Weaken the Eritrean army and regional forces in the Amhara region

Even more important is probably the long-term ambitions of the new Mekele champions. They want to weaken the military capabilities of the Eritrean army and the regional forces in the neighboring region of Amhara, its two enemies. “If it means fighting in the Amhara region or in Eritrea, we will do it,” warns one of Tigraya’s spokesmen.

The ceasefire, which was declared by the government and welcomed by a large part of the international community, could therefore be quickly buried by the Tigrayan and Eritrean forces.
