Kenya’s Weekend Weather Forecast: What to Expect in Your Region

Amidst the lush landscapes of Kenya, heavy rainfall has begun to make its presence felt, particularly in Nairobi. Just last week, the Kenya Meteorological Department made headlines with its forecast, pinpointing the capital and several other regions as the focus of upcoming showers. As the Met’s director, David Gikungu, aptly stated, “Weather has a way of bringing us together or sometimes throwing us apart.” So, what does this weekend hold in store for you?

In their latest five-day weather advisory, released on Friday, June 20, the meteorologists indicated that Nairobi would see a blend of showers and overcast skies throughout the day and into the night. Imagine waking up to a gentle patter on your rooftop, creating a soothing backdrop to your morning routine. Daytime temperatures are expected to peak at around 27°C, while the evenings will usher in a cooler dip, dropping to a brisk 9°C. The vibrant life of Nairobi, embedded in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, is set to weather these fluctuations gracefully.

But Nairobi isn’t alone in this weather narrative. The advisory encompasses several other regions, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka—each poised to experience similar temperate changes. Have you ever paused to consider how interconnected our weather patterns are? One region’s rain can spark life in another’s crops, each drop creating a ripple effect.

On the flip side, the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale are preparing for a contrasting experience. The forecast predicts predominantly sunny days, with just a hint of light showers in select areas over the next five days. With maximum temperatures soaring to 31°C and nighttime highs of 21°C, those idyllic beach outings are likely to continue unimpeded. One can’t help but reminisce about the joy of sunset strolls along the beach, where day meets night in a spectacular display of colors.

Meanwhile, other regions, particularly the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, will face a decidedly different climate. Rain and thunderstorms are on the horizon, bringing a sense of drama to the atmosphere. Counties including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira among others will likely experience a series of showers. Isn’t it fascinating to think about how the sky can shift from clear blue to ominously dark, all within a matter of minutes?

As for the south-eastern lowlands that encompass Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, the forecast has an interesting twist. While cloudy conditions are anticipated, breaks of sunshine will offer brief moments of warmth and light amidst the clouds. Picture yourself sipping a cup of chai, feeling the warmth break through the clouds as temperatures reach a maximum of 31°C, with evenings cooling off to 11°C. Who doesn’t love a cozy evening in, especially when the smell of fresh rain dances through the air?

Turning our gaze to the North-Western region, which consists of Turkana and Samburu counties, a mix of rain and thunderstorms is expected, yet pockets of sunshine will also make appearances. With the possibility of temperatures hitting 36°C, those exploring this rugged terrain should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions throughout the day. The blend of sunshine and storm forms a unique tapestry that echoes life’s unpredictability.

Finally, looking towards the north-eastern region, which includes counties like Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, the atmosphere is poised to remain mostly sunny with some clouds. Temperatures can reach a staggering 37°C during the day, while cooling down to around 15°C at night. Reflecting on the contrasting environments across Kenya, you might find yourself pondering: How do these diverse climates shape the daily lives of people and nature alike?

Weather forecasting may often seem like a realm of numbers and charts, yet it profoundly impacts the rhythms of life in our communities. Each raindrop that falls is a story waiting to unfold, a chance to connect with the natural world. As we get ready to embrace whatever comes our way this weekend, let’s not forget the words of Mikhail Gorbachev: “The environment is where we all meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.” So let’s share this weather experience, revel in its diversity, and maybe even find some joy amidst the rain.

As we navigate our weekend plans, think about the landscapes that weather paints and the stories it tells. How will the rain or the sun influence your journey? For those in Nairobi and beyond, the skies will indeed have a lot to say.
