FGS says deeply appalled at Int’l partners’ response by period

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The federal government of Somalia announced that it is deeply discouraged to see statements from some of its international partners that paint Farmajo’s term extension illegal.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry called “Inflammatory” partners’ statements full of threats, which weakens the political independence and sovereign rights of national institutions.

The statement further said that the response of the international community will serve to encourage terrorist groups and encourage foreign allies to continue their constructive support for security and stability.

The Federal Government of Somalia said it stands by the term extension proposal, which was adopted by the House of Commons and remained committed to conducting the general election in the country within two years.

Enlargement was largely opposed by key political stakeholders in the country, including the federal states of Northeastern State and Jubaland as well as the Senate, opposition candidates and international partners.

Somalia has witnessed an unprecedented political crisis for the past nine months after the signatories of the September 17, 2020 election agreement disagreed on the implementation of the crucial election pact.

The United States has said it is disappointed with the House of Commons’ decision to extend the mandate of the president and parliament, which Washington described as a move that undermines the country’s stability.

The U.S. State Department also announced Tuesday that it will take action, including sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals who destroy Somalia’s electoral process.

The United States, a vital partner of Somalia and the United Nations, called on political leaders to return to the negotiations and quickly reach an inclusive agreement leading to a peaceful election.

The country has missed deadlines for the preparatory elections in December 2020 and February this year due to Farmajo’s poor management and lack of agreement on the controversial election issues.

The stiff stalemates shared stakeholders with Hirshabeele, Galmudug and southwestern states, which ran alongside Villa Somalia towards Northeastern State and Jubaland, after recent talks in Mogadishu did not bear fruit.
