DNA Evidence Unveils Suleiman Abdulkadir Ali as Perpetrator in Unresolved 2013 Minneapolis Gas Station Homicide

The tragic incident took place in 2013 at the intersection of 12th and Washington avenues S., where Haji-Ahmed was found dead with gunshot wounds in a car parked outside a gas station. Authorities located five .45 caliber shells in the vehicle, pinpointing the direction of the gunfire. Surveillance footage captured Ali in a vibrant varsity jacket exiting the car before the shooting.

A security guard witnessed a man in a similar jacket jumping a fence and escaping the scene. Nearby, a torn piece of fabric believed to be from the shooter’s clothing was found. DNA analysis of this crucial clue linked Ali to the crime scene, indicating a genetic profile shared by only a fraction of the world’s population.

The case hit a roadblock when Ali allegedly fled to Somalia, but in 2022, a tipster came forward, claiming Ali confessed to the murder in a phone call on the same day, seeking funds to leave the country due to surveillance footage.
Detectives discovered Ali had returned to the U.S. in Fargo in March 2024 and arrested him after his DNA matched evidence from the crime scene. Authorities suspect Ali returned two years prior from Somalia.

Subsequent investigations solidified Ali’s connection to the crime, resulting in his arrest under a sealed warrant. His upcoming court appearance is scheduled for May 16.
