Conflicts between Ethiopian and Sudanese soldiers in the el-Fashaga triangle

The Sudanese army said on Wednesday that it was being transferred by Ethiopian armed forces in the border area and was subject to a suspension between the two countries. A press release shows that she has suffered from “loss of human life and materials”.

The clashes took place on the return of a Sudanese army patrol around Jebel Abutiour, in the el-Fashaga triangle, southeast of the city of Gedaref. In his statement released Wednesday night, Abdallah Hamdok did not provide details about the clashes, except that his soldiers, according to him, “fell into an ambush” by “Ethiopian forces and militias”. He finally reaffirmed his “confidence in the ability of the armed forces to protect the country’s borders and drive back all aggression”.

A territory that is a source of excitement

The El-Fashaga triangle is a major point of conflict between Sudan and Ethiopia. It is a very fertile farmland, cultivated for 25 years by Ethiopian Amhara farmers. This territory legally belongs to Sudan, which Ethiopia does not deny: its problem is that Ethiopians live there de facto and are protected by militias from neighboring Amhara, which serves as a complementary armed wing for Ethiopian forces in the conflict. against TPLF migrants.

These militias, which the Sudanese call pejoratively “shiftas” (bandits, in French), are accused of regular invasions to steal cattle or carry out kidnappings for ransom.
