Fresh Russian strikes kill two a day after attack on Ukraine shopping centre

At least two people were killed in Russian strikes on Ukraine on Saturday morning, local officials said, as rescue teams continued searching for survivors after a deadly assault on a crowded shopping centre the previous day.

The Kyiv City Military Administration said a warehouse caught fire in the capital’s Darnytskyi district after authorities issued an alert warning of a ballistic missile.

“According to preliminary information, unfortunately, there is one person dead and several injured,” the administration said in a statement on Telegram.

In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone strike killed a man and injured four others, regional military administration chief Ivan Fedorov said.

Search and rescue work at the shopping centre continued overnight, regional military governor Oleksandr Ganzha said. Nine people remained unaccounted for, including two children.

Emergency services said 130 people were injured in the attack, among them 23 children.

The United Nations said Ukraine’s civilian death toll so far this year had reached its highest level since the opening months of the war.

As Russia intensifies its bombardment, Kyiv has repeatedly urged allies to provide more military assistance. Ukrainian forces have faced particular difficulty intercepting waves of ballistic missiles.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has increased its retaliatory strikes inside Russia in recent months, partly in an effort to push Moscow back to negotiations and bring an end to Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

Those diplomatic efforts have yet to produce an agreement. Russia continues to press for sweeping territorial and political concessions from Kyiv.

Mr Zelensky has rejected those demands, saying acceptance would effectively amount to capitulation and leave Ukraine vulnerable to another Russian attack.
