A 75-year-old man extradited from Australia has been remanded in custody in Belfast over allegations of historic sexual offences involving two members of his family.
The accused appeared by video link at Belfast Magistrates’ Court, where he faced charges of indecent assault on a female and gross indecency with a child.
He has not been named because doing so could identify the two complainants.
The alleged offences are said to have taken place between January 1969 and March 1983.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland worked alongside Home Office officials and Australian authorities to trace and detain the man.
He was wanted for trial on 17 charges in total: 14 counts of indecent assault and three counts of gross indecency with a child.
Appearing remotely from nearby Musgrave Police Station, where he was seated in a wheelchair, the man did not speak during the short hearing.
Defence barrister Jonathan Browne, instructed by solicitor Owen Beattie, did not challenge the way the international arrest warrant had been carried out.
Mr Browne also told the court that his client was not applying for bail at this stage.
The court was not given further information about the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
District Judge Anne Marshall ordered that the accused remain in custody until 20 August, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary enquiry.
