Garowe (AX) — A police commander in Puntland State’s Mudug region has died after a gunman shot him in Jariiban district on Wednesday night, officials said Thursday.
Commander Guleed Kadleye was rushed to Jariiban district hospital after the attack but later succumbed to his injuries, according to officials who spoke with AX. Authorities have not publicly specified the nature of those injuries.
The Mudug Regional Police Command said officers detained Ibrahim Kooshin, who is accused of killing Kadleye, shortly after the shooting.
“The suspect was arrested in a rapid operation a few hours after the shooting and will be referred to judicial authorities for legal proceedings,” the police added.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Kadleye was among Somali security personnel who received training in Turkey under former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s administration.
He had also recently been assigned, along with other new police officers, to districts throughout Puntland State as part of efforts to reinforce local security.
In the months before his death, Kadleye had focused on tightening security in Jariiban district and curbing the proliferation of illegal weapons.
Jariiban district also hosts troops recently recruited by the Federal Government of Somalia, while the surrounding area has periodically been linked to piracy-related activity.
