Mogadishu (AX) — The Somali Future Council on Tuesday accused Somalia’s federal government of exploiting the military and security services for political ends against regional administrations and opposition figures, saying the approach risks deepening the country’s fragility.
In a statement, the opposition coalition alleged that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government has been mobilizing militias and stoking security tensions in Puntland State.
The council said the unrest has emerged while Puntland State forces are carrying out operations against ISIS and recording gains against the group.
“Inciting new conflicts could jeopardize the gains made in the fight against ISIS and undermine the efforts of Puntland State and international partners to confront terrorism,” the council said.
The group also charged that federal authorities have previously deployed troops and weapons against Jubbaland, Southwest State and opposition politicians, rather than directing military resources toward the battle against al-Shabab.
According to the council, Somalia remains mired in political disputes over the electoral process and the transfer of power.
It urged the international community, the African Union, the United Nations, IGAD and other partners to act quickly to prevent further worsening of the country’s political and security environment.
The Somali Future Council also called for an inclusive electoral deal supported by international partners and grounded in respect for the Constitution, the neutrality of security institutions and the strengthening of national stability.
The council warned that without urgent intervention, gains made against militant groups could be reversed and Somalia could slide into broader political and security turmoil with regional consequences.
The statement was issued as military movements continue involving federal government-aligned forces based in Puntland State and Puntland State state forces.
Residents in Garowe and nearby areas have voiced concern that the deployments could spark armed confrontation if the situation is not defused.
