Mogadishu (AX) — Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur Madobe, the former speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, has formally transferred his parliamentary duties to First Deputy Speaker Saadia Yasin Haji Samatar following his election as president of Southwest State.

The handover was carried out on Saturday during an extraordinary session of the House of the People Standing Committee at Villa Hargeisa in Mogadishu.

Officials said Saadiya Yasin will serve as acting speaker on a temporary basis until lawmakers elect a new speaker, in accordance with the Constitution and the lower house’s rules of procedure.

Second Deputy Speaker Abdullahi Omar Abshirow paid tribute to Madobe’s time in office, saying his leadership helped speed up legislative work, deepen cooperation inside the chamber and keep parliamentary business running smoothly.

Madobe, in turn, thanked the speaker’s office and members of the House of the People for their backing and collaboration during his tenure, stressing that the progress achieved under his leadership was the product of collective effort.

Saadiya Yasin also praised Madobe’s service and leadership, and pledged that the House of the People would continue carrying out its constitutional responsibilities until a new speaker is chosen.

She said the chamber would focus on lawmaking, oversight of the government and representing the Somali people throughout the transition period.

Madobe was recently elected president of South West State in Baidoa after serving as speaker of Somalia’s lower house of parliament.
