Trump Advocates for Unrestricted Passage of US Vessels Through Panama and Suez Canals

In a bold move, US President Donald Trump has called for the seamless passage of American commercial and military vessels through the Panama and Suez Canals, directing his Secretary of State to make swift advancements on this issue. “We will not let anything stand in the way of our ships,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

For months, Mr. Trump has advocated for greater US control over the Panama Canal, but his recent social media remarks have expanded the conversation to include the crucial Suez route as well. “American Ships, both Military and Commercial, should travel free of charge through the Panama and Suez Canals!” he proclaimed on his Truth Social platform, reiterating the significance of these waterways to the United States.

He further asserted, “These routes would not exist without the contributions of the United States,” highlighting the nation’s historical role in their development. Trump has tasked Secretary of State Marco Rubio to “immediately address this matter,” signaling a clear intent for action.

In support of these efforts, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth remarked during a recent visit to Panama City, “We are working towards an agreement that allows our warships to pass through the canal first and at no cost.” This statement underscores the strategic importance of the Panama Canal, which, along with China, serves as a vital artery for maritime trade.

The Suez Canal, a pivotal link between Europe and Asia, accounted for approximately 10% of global maritime trade before disruptions caused by attacks from Yemen’s Houthi rebels on shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Since the Gaza conflict began, these Iran-backed rebels have targeted vessels, claiming a solidarity with Palestinians and forcing many ships to take costly detours around the southern tip of Africa.

Echoing the economic impact of these disruptions, Egypt reported a staggering 60% drop in canal revenues last year, amounting to a loss of $7 billion (€6.1 billion). In response to these crises, the US military has been targeting Houthi positions since January 2024, with an increase in operations under Mr. Trump, who has vowed to continue military action until shipping routes are safe once more.

As he stated, “We will not rest until the seas are secure for all.” With a continuation of such military steps, the focus remains firmly on reinstating safe and free navigation through these essential channels.
