U.S. Advocates for Peaceful Resolution in Somalia-Ethiopia Dispute

U.S. Pushes for Peaceful Resolution in Somalia-Ethiopia Tensions

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The United States is calling on Somalia and Ethiopia to settle their disputes through diplomacy. It’s closely watching the escalating tensions between these two nations, which teeter on the edge of conflict over boundary issues.

In a bold move, Richard Riley, the U.S. ambassador to Somalia, urged both countries to consider peaceful Alternative Dispute Resolution instead of gearing up for war. “The consequences of conflict would be devastating,” Riley emphasized, underpinning the urgent need for diplomatic engagement.

“We are very much aware and working collaboratively to make sure there is a diplomatic resolution to this current situation,” Riley mentioned in an interview about the emerging conflict.

Speaking in Mogadishu during a Voice of America interview, Riley highlighted that peaceful resolutions are crucial to stabilize Horn of Africa nations clashing over Red Sea access. “Peaceful solutions will bring order to the region,” he observed.

Labeling the situation “unfortunate” and “disruptive,” Riley reiterated America’s position. “We do not recognize the MoU, and we are working to resolve it through diplomatic channels,” he stated, pinning hopes on the next round of Turkish-mediated talks.

Riley firmly declared any hostilities between Ethiopian and Somali forces would be “unacceptable.” “No one can condone conflict or war,” he stated, assuring that international efforts are relentless in seeking peace.

The Turkish-led mediation faced setbacks after Somalia demanded the immediate annulment of the agreement with Ethiopia, which grants Ethiopia a 20-kilometer access to the Red Sea. In return, North Western of Somaliais poised for sovereignty recognition.

The ambassador also reiterated America’s dedication to Somalia’s security. The U.S. remains Somalia’s top donor and security ally. Riley addressed key concerns, including bolstering the Somali National Army in its anti-terror campaign and fostering economic development and global market inclusion.

Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Omar, expressed gratitude for the U.S.’ unwavering support in bolstering the nation’s security. He noted that this partnership has unprecedentedly stabilized the Horn of Africa.

“Somalia deeply appreciates the unwavering commitment of the U.S. Government in helping rebuild our security forces. Together, we’re countering terror threats in the region and fostering stability for future generations,” Omar acknowledged.
