ADDIS ABABA — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa on Monday, where the two leaders held wide-ranging talks on security, trade, economic cooperation and stability in the Horn of Africa, according to official statements.
The discussions centered on deepening the long relationship between Somalia and Ethiopia, broadening collaboration in development and security, and aligning efforts to support peace across the region.
During the meeting, Hassan Sheikh, whose term in office ended last May, congratulated Abiy on his party’s victory in Ethiopia’s recent elections and wished him success as he works to advance the country’s development and stability.
In a post on X, Abiy said the pair discussed bilateral ties, focusing on “economic ties, security and regional stability,” and said relations between the two countries are “anchored in trust and mutual respect.”
The trip is Hassan Sheikh’s first foreign visit since Somalia’s parliament approved a controversial one-year extension of state institutions’ mandates in May, a decision that drew criticism from opposition groups.
