Kenya Airways Halts Passenger Services to Somalia
NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya Airways, the country’s national airline, has put a halt on flights to Somalia, citing ‘operational challenges.’ This move adds another layer to the complex travel landscape in the Horn of Africa.
Kenya Airways is one of the key players on the Mogadishu route. The stoppage comes amidst tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, regarding a deal with North Western State of Somalia about sea access. Ethiopia’s airline also operates the Mogadishu route.
The airline shared that following a thorough assessment and considering current business conditions, the choice was made for the company’s long-term benefit. Interestingly, Kenya Airways reported profits, a positive after a streak of losses.
Aviation insiders suggest the decision might respond to fierce competition from budget-conscious Somali airlines, which squeeze Kenya Airways on this route.
Somali airlines attract many customers by offering low-priced tickets, hassle-free rebooking, and flexible schedules, often flying back and forth between Somalia and Kenya, figures from the industry relayed to the Voice of America.
Meanwhile, EgyptAir, which launched its Mogadishu flights in July, is gaining ground. It may soon fly more than its current twice-weekly schedule. Competitors like Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines already enjoy a solid footing in the region.
The airline announced it would stop flights to Mogadishu as of October 14, 2024. This information was shared by CEO Allan Kilavuka with Mohamed Daghar, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Roads and Transport, via official chat.
The suspension follows a deep dive by KQ’s board into operational hurdles. Kenya’s route to Somalia often faces interruptions, sometimes due to political friction, security concerns, or diplomatic hiccups.
