Ethiopia Raises Concerns Following Arrival of Egyptian Military Personnel and Equipment in Mogadishu
Ethiopia Voices Concern Over Transition in Somalia’s Peace Mission
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AXADLE) — The Ethiopian government has raised significant alarms regarding the forthcoming shift from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to a new support initiative for peace, asserting that this alteration might undermine the delicate balance of stability in the region.
In a statement released today, Ethiopia referred to the situation as “venturing into uncharted waters,” emphasizing the preparations of the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) for this upcoming transition.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized both the AU and the UN for overlooking the persistent concerns expressed by Ethiopia and other Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs).
The announcement highlighted that Ethiopia is being pressured to ignore actions and remarks that devalue the sacrifices made by its defense forces in the area.
“Ethiopia cannot stand idly by while others take steps to disrupt regional harmony,” the statement asserted, illustrating that the nation is attentively observing developments that could pose a threat to its security.
This statement followed reports indicating that two Egyptian military aircraft had landed at Mogadishu airport, reportedly carrying arms and munitions, while Egypt is also slated to send its forces to Somalia as part of the new AU mission.
The Ethiopian government reiterated its unwavering commitment to fostering peace and security in Somalia and throughout the Horn of Africa, accentuating its endeavors to cultivate strong partnerships among neighboring nations.
Ethiopia also highlighted its participation in mediation efforts aimed at tackling issues with the Somali government, noting that there have been some strides made in this regard.
Nonetheless, the statement took a strong stance against the Somali government for allegedly collaborating with external forces to further destabilize the region instead of pursuing peace.
Ethiopia called on all stakeholders involved in sanctioning the new peace support mission to address the legitimate apprehensions of regional players and TCCs, warning that hasty measures could yield dire long-term consequences.
“Ethiopia cannot harbor acceptance of actions that threaten the progress made in combating regional and international terrorist hazards,” the statement concluded.
The release wrapped up with a firm reassertion of Ethiopia’s dedication to peaceful resolution of conflicts and collaboration with Somalia and the international community to uphold regional tranquility and stability.
