Somalia Urges Steady Support for African Union Peace Efforts

Mogadishu (AX) — Strengthening International Support for AUSSOM

The Somali government has once again placed a heartfelt call for robust international support to enhance the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). This appeal isn’t just about finance; it’s about fostering a sense of global responsibility toward stabilizing a nation that has faced significant challenges for decades. Sustained financial aid, along with long-term funding solutions, are not mere line items on a budget; they are vital lifelines for the ongoing efforts to stabilize Somalia and make meaningful progress.

During a recent virtual ministerial session of the African Union Peace and Security Council, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar conveyed his profound concern over the mission’s financial standing. He highlighted, with an air of urgency, the necessity for a dedicated AUSSOM Financing Conference. Imagine, for a moment, the possibilities if a partner nation from the Gulf could host this pivotal event. Such a collaborative effort could lead to sustainable funding frameworks while fostering an environment of transparency and accountability.

“We are calling on all African Union member states to contribute more significantly through the AU Peace Fund,” said Omar. “Greater African ownership will not only inspire international confidence but also ensure the success of AUSSOM—currently the largest peace operation on the continent.”

The relevance of AUSSOM cannot be overstated; however, the United Nations still finds itself in the midst of a financial conundrum, seeking an additional $41.6 million in contributions outside the normal budget. This search for funding arrives at a time when Somalia is grappling with alarming threats from al-Shabaab militants and navigating a precarious political landscape. One can’t help but wonder: What will it take for the global community to rally behind a nation in dire need?

AUSSOM’s initial projections for the annual budget had set the bar at $190.2 million. Yet, in a twist of fiscal policy, the decision to maintain the troop reimbursement rate at $828 per soldier per month—rather than adjusting it to $1,000—has led to a reduction in the revised budget to $166.5 million. It raises a critical question: Are we placing financial parameters over the lives and safety of those who protect peace in an unstable environment?

In the midst of these pressing discussions, Minister Omar took a moment to extend Somalia’s heartfelt condolences following the tragic loss of five Ugandan peacekeepers in a helicopter crash in Mogadishu on July 2. “Their sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Omar remarked poignantly, expressing solidarity with the victims’ families, the Ugandan government, and the broader AUSSOM community.

As AUSSOM prepares to replace the ATMIS mission in 2025, it signifies a substantial shift in the framework for security within Somalia. This transition is part of a larger strategy to gradually hand over security responsibilities to Somali forces. Yet, it begs the contemplation: Are we truly equipped for this shift? Can we ensure that the newly empowered Somali forces uphold stability and peace in the region?

The call for robust support and comprehensive funding does not merely reflect a fiscal requirement; it represents a commitment to peace, hope, and a more stable future for Somalia. The challenges are daunting, but as echoed in the words of mentors and leaders throughout history, “The road to peace is long and fraught with obstacles, but the journey is well worth the partnership and perseverance.” It’s this partnership that we must foster, not just within Africa but around the globe.

The Somali government’s appeal is a reminder that global solidarity can create ripples of positive change. We all play a role, whether through funding, support, or advocacy. So, let us ponder this: How can we all contribute to making a difference? Although the road ahead might be complex, collectively, we can forge pathways toward lasting peace and stability.
