Sama Lukonde first visited the Goma Volcanological Observatory (OVG) to ensure the latest changes in volcano behavior, soil deformation and seismicity before making a decision. “Today, when we have just arrived in Goma, we hope that we will continue to have better conditions and that this will enable the population to return.”

He then met with humanitarian actors to assess needs and consider the second phase of aid. According to the UN, 230,000 out of 400,000 people had evacuated the so-called “red” zone in Goma. “People are suffering wherever they are. Despite the help, we were able to give. The government will plan for the return and humanitarian workers will be ready to do their part. Of course, we remain aware of the needs of the population, explains the UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for the Democratic Republic of Congo, Diego Zorilla.
The other important point is the resumption of Goma Airport. The traffic is approved again. This will enable the delivery of humanitarian aid and the deployment of support teams in the various areas affected by the volcanic eruption.
