In Congo-Brazzaville, the March 21 presidential election campaign has been in full swing since March 5. The meeting places arranged by the various candidates are crowded. Their activists almost no longer respect the barrier measures against coronavirus. Civil society is amazed and simply asks the authorities to refine all sectors that are still experiencing constraints.

as reported from Brazzaville, Loïcia Martial

We are at the meeting for a majority formation organized at the entrance to Bacongo, the second district of Brazzaville. The audience is colorful. The activists have their masks in their hands or are carelessly worn. No distance is removed. This arrangement is observed during the meetings of all the candidates who mobilize the most.

He leaves the activist Franck Nzila Malembé from the interrogation program Mouvement Progrès. “There is a good question for the coronavirus committee. Are the meetings between the various candidates not a moment for the spread of Covid-19? », He jumped out.

Franck Nzila Malembé asks the authorities to lift the restrictions that artists and nightclub owners have been subject to for a year.

“It’s sad. What we are asking for today is to clearly define and not hypocrisy. We believe that the cultural sector should be demarcated: Let theaters reopen; that we stop curfews at 8pm on weekends because Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire would like to come back to life, ”suggests Mr Nzila Malembé.

Officially, more than 5,000 people have contracted coronavirus. Most of them are cured; but at least 120 lost their lives. The country received 100,000 doses of the Chinese government’s sinopharm vaccine last week.
