During a ceremony held at the prestigious V&A Museum in London, Mr. Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz officially endorsed the agreement, aptly named the Kensington Treaty. The Prime Minister expressed a commitment to “work ever more closely” on critical issues such as trade, security, and defense, stating, “This treaty marks a new chapter in our countries’ relations.”
This treaty not only aims to “reinforce Euro-Atlantic security” but also establishes a framework for supporting their respective defense forces. The agreement was further bolstered by the signatures of UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul.
During his address, Prime Minister Starmer remarked to Chancellor Merz, “It’s a privilege to have you here today, particularly to sign this Kensington Treaty, which is a very special treaty—believe it or not, it’s the first of its kind between our two nations.” This spirit of collaboration reiterates the intention to strengthen ties and ensure a safe and prosperous future.
The treaty outlines a mutual commitment to “reinforce Euro-Atlantic security and ensure effective deterrence against potential aggressors” through enhanced defense collaboration. Furthermore, it reaffirms unwavering support for NATO and its allies, emphasizing the importance of a united front in an ever-evolving global landscape.
Additionally, as part of this innovative deal, Berlin will permit selected UK passengers to access passport e-gates, starting with frequent travelers, a change expected to take effect by the end of August.
Moreover, the treaty includes provisions for establishing a task force tasked with creating direct train services between the two nations, with hopes that these services could commence within the next decade.
Finally, acknowledging the significance of youth and education, the treaty articulates the shared value placed on bilateral school and youth exchanges, with a commitment to facilitating these opportunities for future generations.
“Investing in our youth is investing in our future,” Prime Minister Starmer remarked, encapsulating the essence of this agreement.
