President Macron’s arrival marks the first state visit by an EU leader to the UK since Brexit, highlighting the importance of this occasion.
In recent weeks, the UK has been advocating for more stringent actions from French authorities regarding the beaches along the Channel coastline. Prime Minister Starmer is aiming to negotiate a “one in, one out” agreement, which would allow for the return of small boat migrants to the continent, in return for the UK accepting asylum seekers from Europe with British ties. As Starmer noted, “We must find humane ways to address this complex issue.”
Remarkably, the number of individuals crossing the Channel in small boats this year has already surpassed 20,000, with the current tally exceeding 21,000—a record pace for this time of year.
During this significant visit, spouses Brigitte Macron and Lady Victoria Starmer will enjoy tea and a tour of Downing Street together, culminating in a joint lunch with their husbands. The Macrons will also be hosted by King Charles at Windsor, where they will pay tribute by laying flowers on Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb, and visit the horse gifted to her by President Macron in 2022 to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee.
In a recent speech to MPs and peers, President Macron vowed to implement measures aimed at reducing the number of migrants crossing the English Channel, describing the situation as a “burden” on both nations. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “France and the UK have a shared responsibility to address irregular migration with humanity, solidarity, and fairness.”
Looking ahead, decisions made at the upcoming Franco-British summit are expected to align with both countries’ goals for cooperation and tangible outcomes on these pressing matters. As Macron articulated, the summit will address “our aims for cooperation and tangible results on these major issues.”
Furthermore, the leaders are anticipated to co-host a meeting regarding the “coalition of the willing,” aimed at establishing a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, contingent upon a ceasefire with Russia.
As we navigate these complex discussions, the hope remains that collaboration will lead to positive outcomes for both nations and those affected by the ongoing migration challenges.
