The Oscar-winning filmmaker introduced the project during Universal’s presentation at the annual convention of cinema owners and industry executives.

With Disclosure Day, Spielberg returns once again to alien-themed storytelling, almost 50 years after Close Encounters of the Third Kind first brought his fascination with the unknown to the screen.

Addressing the crowd at Caesars Palace, Spielberg said he approached the film with a deeper feeling that its central idea may be less implausible than it first appears.

Disclosure Day is set for release in cinemas this summer and features Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo and Colin Firth.

Calling it “an experience”, Spielberg quipped that moviegoers would need nothing more than “a seatbelt” for the ride from start to finish.

While at the event, Spielberg also received an honour from the Motion Picture Association and used the occasion to again urge the industry to preserve longer periods of theatrical exclusivity before films head to streaming services.

He commended Universal for maintaining a 45-day theatrical window for wide releases, then joked on stage that he was now hearing discussion of stretching that to 60 days.

The comments land as studios and cinema operators continue to debate how to safeguard box office income in an era reshaped by streaming.
